J&K Seed Bank

The Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Center is constructing a special depot at Glacier Cave in Pahalgam to preserve the seeds of all crops around the world.

The thousands of seeds stored on this glacier will be used by the bank in the event of a  catastrophic disaster or nuclear war in the world and crop damage.

The cave was built to protect the seeds stored in the event of a nuclear war  or natural disaster.

The Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Center will set up an  observatory in a cave on this glacier gene to create a 'seed bank'.
In this regard,  the Jammu and Kashmir Medical Plants Introduction Center has also decided to send a proposal to the Government of Jammu and Kashmir.

Sheikh Gulzar, a volunteer at the institute, said the seeds of all the world's crops would be kept in the cave.

Sheikh Gulzar said that there are 1,400 such seed banks in the world at present but they are all located in places where there is either political instability or in places where there is a risk of natural disasters

The temperature of the plugs will help keep these seeds safe. The walls of the bank will be made of lightweight concrete and its doors will be made of special iron sheets.

Willow trees in Kashmir

Willow bark tea Kashmir

It grows in many parts of south and southeastern Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Kashmir, Laos,China and Thailand,. In Manipur, in NE India, the new flowers of Indian willow, locally known as ঊযুম (ooyum) are eaten, and are considered delicious. In Maharashtra, this tree is called walunj.

Willow has been a standard tree grown in Kashmir valley for ages and a staple feeder for the indigenous Willow industry indulging in willow furniture making and the ubiquitous Willow bat used in the cricket world. It was only in the later half of 19th century with the advent of British and the game of cricket in India

The active ingredient in willow bark is salicin, but the accompanying flavonoids and plant particles might be part of what make willow bark effective. For this reason, some people prefer to actually chew on the unprocessed bark of the willow tree. It is difficult to determine how much salicin you are getting from each piece of bark, so this method of consumption should be approached with caution.

Willow bark tea: Some health food stores sell willow bark tea, showing it as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Steep willow bark tea for two to three minutes in hot water. When consuming willow bark in this form, it’s hard to tell how much salicin you are getting in each serving of tea.

Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic Acid): Originally derived from the willow tree’s barkaspirin is one of the most widely used medications globally.
