Mamra badam, Mamra almond trees in Kashmir, cultivation

Mamra tree production in Kashmir
What is the reason for the high price of Mamra Almonds?
Mamra almonds accounts for roughly 7-10 %of total global almond production and are hence considered as the premium variety of almonds in the world. This makes Mamra Badams very expensive,  It can be characterised by its concave shape..

Mamra almonds are mainly found in Iran, Afghanistan, Waziristan and Kashmir. They are organically cultivated and are not mass produced, making them the most expensive variety of almonds.
Mamra almonds are considered to be more nutrient-dense than California almonds due to their smaller size and higher oil content. They are also crunchier and sweeter than other varieties of almonds. Price of Mamra Almond INR 4800 per kg as on date.

There was a time when in Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir province ofJammu and Kashmir, Mamra Almondss were available in such large quantities that they were seen piled up on common carts, but now they are not seen even in shops, while they are so expensive that no poor person can find them. Can't even think of buying it.

Why did it go away from the middle and poor classes? There are probably many reasons for this, but those in the trade agree on two things. One of them is that Mamra almonds is mostly being exported, while the other is that its production is affected by drought.

Tahir Hamadani, the owner of Dubai-Kashmir Dry Fruit located in this market and involved in the dry fruit business for 45 years, said that the main reason for this is export, saying that most of them go to China.

However, they said that they do not know why this Chinese is going more, whether they eat it or make a medicine etc.

He said that Mamra almond trees are in the mountains of Pulwama,  Budgam and Anantnag regions of Kashmir, while this mountain range of Pir Panjal goes further to Kashmir. That's why there are trees across Kashmir too.

He said that due to these reasons, its price has increased from Rs 1,200 to Rs 4,800 over the past few years. However, unpolished or lower quality Mamra Badam is also available for Rs 3,800 to Rs 4,000 per kg.

Jammu andKashmir Medicinal  Plants IntroductionCentre is working day and night to increase the mass production of this real almond trees and it takes 5 years to produce these plants and most of the demand of these plants is also in foreign countries and 2019-2021 This institution has produced 22,000 plants in the center of Kashmir and all these plants have beenexported from Kashmir either by Italy or China.
