Health Benefits of Saw palmetto for Women & Men

Saw palmetto berris Kashmir

What is Saw palmetto?
Saw palmetto is also known by its scientific name, Serenoa repens. It is a type of fan palm that usually grows together in clumps and it primarily grows along the Gulf Coast of the United States. The health benefits of saw palmetto come from its berries, or drupe fruit. Saw palmetto extract is derived from these berries and is widely available over the counter in capsule or tincture forms. Saw palmetto is also an ingredient in a number of prescription medications commonly prescribed by doctors in Europe.

Saw Palmetto and Your Hormones
While saw palmetto may help men and women in slightly different ways, one of the main reasons the herb is so beneficial is due to the way it balances hormones. An enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT, or dihydrotestosterone. Too much DHT can contribute to health issues in both men and women.

Comfrey Tea Fertilizer: How to Brew Your Own Plant Booster

Benefits of Comfrey fertilizer in the organic Garden

Comfrey is not only good for our bodies, comfrey can be helpful to our garden soil and other plants as well. Comfrey can be made into a “compost tea” which is beneficial for fertilizing your garden. Some of your livestock will happily munch away on this plant, particularly chickens and pigs as well.

This powerful herbal plant is an excellent mulch and fertilizer. It is well balanced with a good combination of potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus. When you use comfrey as mulch, it will mine those nutrients from deep under the soil, and then return them to the soil where other plants can access them.

It is very easy to mulch with comfrey. Simply chop it down, and if possible, chop it into smaller pieces. Lay the pieces around the plants you want to mulch and the comfrey will quickly decompose, allowing the nutrients to go back into the soil.

How to Make Comfrey Tea Fertilizer
If you don’t want to use comfrey as a mulch, you can make comfrey tea to use as a FERTILIZER FOR YOUR PLANTS, NOT FOR YOU. Do not ingest this tea, rather, it is a liquid plant feed.

Place your plant matter – the leaves, stems, etc – into a container and cover it with water. Put a lid on it to contain the odor. You’ll want to let this mixture brew for four to six weeks.

NOTE:-You can use both dried  or fresh green comfrey leaves as a natural fertilizer by incorporating them into compost, using them as a mulch, or creating a liquid fertilizer by steeping them in water.

To use it, mix it with 1/3 ‘tea’ and 2/3 water and use it as you would any other liquid fertilizer when you water your plants.

Spring is here and this is a great time to get your hands in the dirt. So be thinking of a place in your garden where you can plant this baby. If you live in Southern Kashmir, I would love for you to stop by and I can give you a start.

Why Pecan Trees Are the Next Big Thing for Indian Farmers

Pecan tree nursery in Kashmir

Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) cultivation in India is still in its nascent stage but has great potential, especially in regions with suitable climatic conditions. Here’s a detailed overview:

1. Climate and Soil Requirements
Climate: Pecan trees require a temperate to subtropical climate with distinct seasons. They need hot summers (27-35°C) for nut development and chilly winters (0-10°C) for dormancy.

Rainfall: Around 700-1,500 mm annually, but the trees should not experience waterlogging.
Soil : Well-drained, deep loamy soil with a pH of 6.0-7.5 is ideal.

Since pecan is primarily grown in the United States, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kashmir, Tajkistan and Mexico, it is a non-native crop in India. However, some regions have shown potential for cultivation:

2. Suitable Regions in India
Himachal Pradesh (HP)
Uttarakhand
North-Eastern states (especially Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Nagaland)
Parts of Punjab and Haryana (with irrigation and proper management)
