Climate & Soil Requirements
Mulethi (Glycyrrhiza glabra) thrives in temperate to subtropical climates, making Kashmir an ideal location.
It prefers deep, well-drained sandy loam to clayey soil with a slightly alkaline pH (6-8).
The plant requires moderate rainfall and cold winters, both of which are naturally present in Kashmir.
Mulethi is propagated mainly through root cuttings or seeds. The best time for planting in Kashmir is spring (March-April) or early monsoon (July-August).
It requires rows spaced at 60 cm with 30 cm between plants.
Irrigation: Moderate watering is required, avoiding waterlogging.
Fertilization: Organic manure or well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) is beneficial.
Weeding & Mulching: Regular weeding and mulching help retain soil moisture.
Mulethi takes 2.5 to 3 years to mature before harvesting.
The roots are carefully dug out, cleaned, and dried for sale.
A well-maintained farm can yield 3-5 tonnes of dried roots per hectare.
High demand in the pharmaceutical, herbal, and confectionery industries.
Mulethi is used in Ayurveda, Unani, and traditional medicine.
Kashmir can emerge as a major licorice producer for domestic and international markets.
