Pecan Tree Farming in Kashmir: A Profitable Future Crop

Pecan tree farming is a profitable long-term agricultural investment that produces high-value nuts for local and international markets. Pecans are rich in healthy fats, proteins, and antioxidants, making them popular in bakeries, confectionery products, and health foods. Once established, pecan trees can remain productive for 50–100 years, providing a stable and sustainable source of income for farmers.

Pecan trees grow best in deep, well-drained soils with moderate irrigation and plenty of sunlight. Farmers typically plant grafted pecan trees at a spacing of about 10–12 meters, allowing proper growth and nut production. Trees usually begin producing small quantities of nuts after 5–7 years, while full commercial production starts around 10–12 years.

A mature pecan orchard can produce 20–50 kg of nuts per tree, which can result in 2–4 tons per hectare depending on management and climate conditions. Because pecans are considered a premium nut crop, market prices are usually high, making pecan farming a valuable long-term investment.

During the early years before the trees mature, farmers can grow intercrops such as vegetables, medicinal plants, or saffron to generate additional income. Proper irrigation, pruning, and pest control improve productivity and nut quality.

Pecan farming is especially suitable for farmers who want a low-maintenance perennial crop with long-term financial returns. With increasing global demand for healthy foods, pecan cultivation offers strong potential for future agricultural profitability.
