Crocus sativus Saffron Corms Available at JK Seed Bank Kashmir

For Crocus sativus (saffron), genotype, corm calibre (size), and corm type are important because they strongly influence flowering, stigma yield, daughter-corm production, and field establishment.

1. Genotype
Crocus sativus is a sterile triploid (2n = 3x = 24) and is normally propagated vegetatively through corms. Therefore, farmers do not generally produce new saffron genotypes through true seed.
Important saffron planting materials can differ in:
  • Flowering intensity
  • Number of flowers per corm
  • Stigma weight
  • Daughter-corm production
  • Resistance/tolerance to diseases and environmental stress

3. Corm type

Daughter corm: Newly developed corm produced during multiplication. Small daughter corms may require one or more seasons to reach flowering size.
Healthy corm: Firm, undamaged, disease-free and without signs of fungal infection or rotting.
Diseased or damaged corm: Should not be used for commercial planting because it can introduce pathogens into the field.

For high-yield saffron cultivation, the best planting material is generally true-to-type, locally adapted, large-calibre, mature and disease-free corms. Rather than simply buying the largest corms available, growers should consider corm weight, genetic uniformity, health, dormancy status and certified source together.
