Kashmir’s Golden Nut: The Rise of Sweet Chestnut Farming

At JK Seeds Bank, our interest is not simply in supplying trees but in promoting useful and potentially valuable plant material for Kashmir.

Chestnut plants can be considered for:
  • Fruit and nut orchards
  • Private gardens
  • Agroforestry plantations
  • Farm boundaries
  • Demonstration gardens
  • Long-term timber production
  • Specialty nut production

Growers should select a well-drained site with good sunlight. Chestnut generally performs better in soils that are not waterlogged, and site conditions should be evaluated before establishing a commercial orchard.

Chestnut trees grown from seed can show variation in growth, nut characteristics and productivity. For commercial orchards, selected or grafted planting material can therefore be particularly valuable when available.

JK Seeds Bank is interested in developing and promoting chestnut planting material suited to local growing conditions. Kashmir also has historical chestnut-growing populations that provide an opportunity for further selection and evaluation.

A future Kashmir chestnut programme could compare different selections for tree growth, flowering, nut size, yield, harvest time and local adaptation.

Chestnut should be viewed as a long-term crop rather than a quick-return fruit plant. Young trees need proper establishment, irrigation and nutrition before reaching productive maturity.

For farmers and landowners with suitable land, planting a small number of chestnut trees can also be a practical way to evaluate their performance before expanding into a larger orchard.

If you are interested in Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) plants, chestnut seeds or other specialty fruit and tree planting material, contact JK Seeds Bank for current availability.

We are building a collection of useful trees, seeds and plants for growers interested in Kashmir's agricultural diversity, nursery production and long-term tree crops.
