The Chinar tree (Platanus orientalis), locally known as Boonyi, is one of the most magnificent and recognizable trees of Kashmir. Large Chinars planted around historic gardens, roadsides, villages and open spaces create spectacular seasonal landscapes that attract residents, photographers and visitors.
Despite their importance, mature Chinar trees can face pressure from urban development, road expansion, construction, pollution, inappropriate pruning and changes in land use. Conservation therefore requires both protection of existing mature trees and propagation of new plants.
Growing Chinar from seed can be part of a long-term conservation strategy. Nurseries, botanical gardens, educational institutions, private growers and environmental organizations can help maintain healthy planting material and encourage responsible cultivation.
