Ulmus Wallichiana: The Hidden Treasure of Kashmir’s Forests

Kashmir Elm tree
Ulmus wallichiana is a species of Himalayan elm, also known as the Kashmir elm, which is native to the western Himalayas, including the Kashmir region. It is a multipurpose tree valued for its medicinal properties (such as for bone fractures) and for its timber and fodder for livestock, which has led to its overexploitation and classification as a vulnerable species. The tree grows at altitudes between 1800 and 3000 meters in moist ravines and temperate forests.

Growing Gold: How Empress Tree Farming Can Bring You Profit Fast

Empress trees in Kashmir
Empress trees are among the world's fastest-growing species, capable of reaching up to 15 feet (4.5 meters) in a single season and maturity in as little as 5-7 years, allowing for timber harvest within 5-8 years. Their growth rate, which is highest in warm, sunny conditions during their active growth phase, makes them ideal for timber production, but it slows with weaker daylight and colder temperatures in autumn.

Profitability: Empress wood is in high international demand, with prices ranging from $650  (INR 57,725) to $880 (INR 78150.78 ) per cubic meter, making it a highly profitable tree to grow.

From Tulip Fields to Tuber Farms: The Rise of Jerusalem Artichokes in Kashmir

Jerusalem artichoke flowers Kashmir
Jerusalem artichoke, also known as Sunchoke or Helianthus tuberosus, is a tuberous perennial plant belonging to the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is valued for its edible tubers, rich in inulin, a natural prebiotic beneficial for gut health and diabetic-friendly diets.

Jerusalem artichokes are a root vegetable, also known as sunchokes, and they are not a spice. They are a starchy, underground tuber from the sunflower family, characterized by a nutty and slightly sweet flavor. They are consumed like potatoes and other vegetables, and are eaten cooked in various dishes, not as a seasoning.

In Kashmir region, the crop is gaining attention as a climate-resilient, profitable, and eco-friendly alternative to potatoes.

Kalonji Farming: A Profitable Spice Cultivation in India

Kalonji seeds Kashmir
Kalonji (Black Cumin) farming requires well-drained, organic-rich soil in a tropical or sub-tropical climate. Planting occurs from mid-September to mid-October, burying seeds about 1/8 inch deep and 4-6 inches apart. The crop needs minimal irrigation with the first watering immediately after sowing, and then based on soil moisture.

Regular weeding every 30 days helps control unwanted plants and improve yield. The plants mature in about 130-140 days, after which they are harvested by uprooting the entire plant.
