| Himalayan Rajmah Kashmir |
The agricultural produce of Kashmir is renowned worldwide for its unique climate, fertile soil and natural beauty. Among these valuable crops is Kashmiri Rajmah, which is cultivated especially in the mountainous areas located at high altitude. This Rajmah is considered to be distinguished from the common Rajmah due to its excellent taste, soft texture, quick decomposition and high nutritional quality.
Rajmah is cultivated on a large scale in the high altitude areas of Pir Panjal in Kashmir. The elevation of these areas is generally 1,500 to 2,700 meters or more, where the days are mild, the nights are cool and the soil is rich in organic matter. These natural factors give the Rajmah grains a unique taste, aroma and nutrition.
Kashmiri Rajmah grown in high altitude areas is available in different colors and varieties, among which red, dark red, speckled and brown varieties are prominent. Their seeds are relatively small but have a very good taste. After cooking, they acquire a soft, creamy texture, which makes them a special ingredient in traditional Kashmiri dishes at home and in hotels.

Nutritionally, Kashmiri rajmah is an excellent source of protein, dietary fiber, iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium and folate. It is very low in fat while high in antioxidants, which help protect the body from harmful free radicals. Regular consumption is considered beneficial for heart health, digestive system, prevention of anemia and increasing physical energy.
Rajmah is usually sown between April and May, while the crop is ready in September and October. Farmers prefer organic fertilizers, cow dung compost and natural agricultural methods, which not only maintain soil fertility but also achieve environmentally friendly production. After harvesting, rajmah is dried thoroughly in the sun and preserved to maintain its quality and taste.
Today, the demand for Kashmiri Rajmah is increasing not only in India but also in the Gulf countries, Europe and North America. If more attention is paid to its scientific cultivation, standard packaging, Geographical Identification (GI Tag), branding and exports, this crop can play an important role in strengthening the rural economy of Kashmir, increasing the income of farmers and further strengthening the agricultural identity of Kashmir in the global market.
In short, Kashmiri Rajmah grown at high altitude is not just an agricultural crop but a symbol of Kashmir’s natural heritage, traditional farming and high nutritional quality. Its unique characteristics make it one of the best Rajmah varieties in the world and its commercial importance has bright prospects of increasing further in the future.
This Kashmiri Rajmah can now be grown in every area of Kashmir even at low altitude. Its seeds will be available in 2027.
